How many active fraternities are there?
There were 6,233 fraternity chapters on about 800 college campuses. New members in US sororities during the 2016-2017 academic year numbered about 145,600, according to the National Panhellenic Conference, or NPC.

Today there are over 1500 fraternities and sororities in existence that use Greek letters in their name. Many Greek organizations are informally known more by their nicknames than their Greek letters.

Why do frats use Greek letters?
The founding members surmised that the Greek name would only be decipherable to students in the know who had the intellectual savvy to recognize the language.
