The Faculty of Education endeavours to use a point system for admissions. The achievement levels are then translated into points for each NSC subject. Points will be used to calculate the total Admission Point Score (APS). The minimum APS required for a Bachelor’s degree is 26.
What is the APS needed for teaching?
To be considered for this qualification, Applicants must have an Admission Points Score (APS) of at least 25 (excluding Life Orientation).
How APS is calculated at WSU?

To calculate your APS, you will need to add your six best subject percentages. Please note that this excludes Life Orientation. Applicants will need to meet the minimum APS in order to be considered for a specific programme. Generally, you get points for each matric subject you write an exam in.

What are requirements for teaching?
You may follow one of two routes in becoming a teacher, namely: a four-year Bachelor of Education degree (B. Ed.); a three-or four-year Bachelor’s degree, followed by a one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). Once completed, both routes lead to classification as a professionally qualified teacher.
Can I do teaching with higher certificate?
A higher Certificate in ABET takes four years to complete. If you have enrolled for a Higher Certificate in ABET and you want to become a teacher, you can enrol for a BA and thereafter, a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Senior and FET Phase).
Can I study teaching with a Diploma pass in matric?
Yes, you can do Teaching with a Diploma pass. However, this can only be a specific Diploma Qualification in Teaching, such as a Diploma in Grade R Teaching. If you want to study for a Degree Qualification in Teaching, you need to have a Matric Bachelor’s Degree pass.

Can I Study Grade R Teaching Without Matric? No, you cannot study teaching without matric. Universities require you to have a matric to do a teaching course. You can apply for an Educare course at distance learning or TVET colleges.
What is the pass mark for Grade 11?
In order for a learner to be promoted from Grade 10 to 11 and Grade 11 to 12, the learner must achieve 40% in three subjects, one of which is an official language at Home Language level, and 30% in three subjects, provided that the School Based Assessment component is submitted in the subject failed.
