How our Residential Colleges work. Unlike many universities, Rice doesn’t have sororities or fraternities, nor is there an honors college or an athletic dorm. Instead, we randomly sort our new students into one of these 11 colleges.
How does Rice housing work?
On-campus housing is not guaranteed beyond the first year at Rice. Although most of the students who want to live in the colleges can be accommodated, demand usually exceeds the available number of rooms. The determination of housing for sophomores, juniors, and seniors is made by their residential college government.
How do Yale’s residential colleges work?
Yale’s residential colleges have nothing to do with majors. Instead, all students are randomly assigned to a college before they even arrive on campus and spend all four years living alongside that cohort.
Does Rice require you to live on campus?
Students are not required to live on campus. First year students are given priority for on-campus housing. Most Rice students live off campus. In 2021, 38% of undergrads at Rice lived in some kind of on-campus housing and 62% of students lived off-campus or commuted to Rice.

In 2002, Wiess became the only college at Rice to relocate from one building to another. Wiess is currently the southwesternmost residential college, located adjacent to Hanszen and the South Power Plant.

Does Harvard have residential colleges?
We support Harvard’s unique residential system, which consists of 12 residential undergraduate communities (Houses) of 400-500 upper-level students and the Dudley Community (approximately 150 off-campus students, and the Visiting Undergraduate program).

Since Rice is in the heart of Houston, there is a ton of stuff to do: theater, museums, bars, clubs, ethnic locations… anything you can imagine. As a student, I stayed up late to hang out with people, just talking or hanging out, but I would also have to do homework.

Rice students are friendly and helpful to one another, and they’re always fun to be around. Generally speaking, Rice students are quirky and laid back. There isn’t a cut-throat competitive environment here. It’s much more collaborative, which is quite refreshing.

Is Rice University Ivy League?
Rice is not a member of the Ivy League. However, Rice does share many qualities with the Ivies: high-caliber academics, strong alumni network, prolific research, and international renown.
Do you have a roommate at Rice?
May I choose my own roommate? Prospective residents may request a specific roommate on their housing application. All mutually-requested roommates must have a complete housing application, including a deposit and valid offer letter to a graduate program at Rice University on file.
Does Rice University have a curfew?
There is a curfew from midnight to 5 a.m., and people have been stopped and arrested for being out and about during that time. There are probably no hotel rooms anywhere, though I haven’t looked. You won’t be able to dine with us at Rice, as we are carefully conserving food supplies for our students.
Does Rice University allow pets in dorms?
Among the ordinances and rules Rice enforces are the following: DOGS MUST BE LEASHED WHILE ON CAMPUS. THE LEASH CANNOT BE LONGER THAN 8 FEET IN LENGTH.

Through a need-based financial aid package, The Rice Investment grants families in the income ranges listed above either awards that cover full tuition, fees, and room and board; full tuition; or half tuition, depending on total income and assets.
